Before we get to the basic questions… because I’m old… and don’t know anything… blugaze? Is this a thing? Legitimately? I mean… it makes perfect sense… but… really? Did you guys come up with this?
Ryan: Blugaze is a self coined term, it actually predates Cairns as what kind of music I wanted to make. There just seemed like an open lane to use less conventional instruments to create spacey, chamber tones. I’m yet to hear of another band hopping on board, but we will see!
Also… are there four of you in the band? Or three? Twelve? Who’s in this band? What do you play? Where are you from? When is that apocalypse coming?
Ryan: Right now the band is myself (mandola), Brian Tremper (drums), and Jenni Long (trumpet) with the occasional surprise guest (we may have one in store for you at Dreyfest!). We hail from ol’ Missoula though Jenni is a Billings hometown hero. The apocalypse comes at the area 51 uprising on September 20th so I’m glad we could squeeze this festival in beforehand.
I know that some of you are Dreyfest veterans… in fact, I think it was just last year that Jenni Long knocked three dudes out, ate 5 glass bottles whole, and stole Chairea’s van. How will she top her antics from last year?
Jenni: All I can say is that I live in the moment. I apply this to life just as I apply it to my trumpet playing. However I express my love of music at this year’s Dreyfest, I assure I won’t hold anything back.
What is the language of birds?
Ryan: The Language of Birds is an old Celtic ideal that birds are the only creatures that have the ability to cross between the world we are in and the world that houses magic, death and everything in between.
If the most phenomenal guitarist wanted to join the band… would you, indeed, turn them down?
Ryan: Yep, no guitars means no guitars. It’s a challenge we’ve given ourselves. There’s enough bands to go around for guitarists.
Anything you’re looking forward to doing this year at Dreyfest? Anyone you’re excited about seeing?
Jenni & Ryan: Kickball, definitely kickball.
Jenni: Bob Bowman and Matt Villinger, Alex Nauman, Idaho Green, Panther Car, and Chairea. Also very excited to hear the poetry jam and all the comics.
