The Cusp of Greatness

Merry Chrimbus and Happy Holidays to my merry little league! We are officially down to the FINAL FOUR. What a great holiday treat. A couple of huge upsets in the first round have led us to these beautiful matchups. Two of our four semifinalists are seeking a first championship while the other two are looking to cement their dynasties. These last two weeks will test their prowess as an owner, and maybe a little Yuletide miracle will sprout its head along the way. A brand new shiny trophy and some newfound league champion powers await the winner! Ho, Ho, Ho, ya filthy animals…

Matchup of the Week

#4

Commish (9-7, 2nd Pacific)

V

#6

Austin (8-8, 3rd Pacific)

Well, well, well… Look who it is, my faithful following. Your beloved Commish notched yet another playoff victory in his storied career and is back in the mix again for yet another championship. A third to be precise. It’s been a few years, but how could we forget the epic triumphs of ‘The Commish Era’? A beautiful Golden Age where I ruled the lands as leader and hero. For those of you too young (Wizard and Jeremy), this is a good history lesson. But, this franchise unfortunately hit rock bottom last year. The only year I’ve ever missed the playoffs. Dark times… Through the pain the Commish vanquished his demons and drafted a stellar team that surprised the league and is on the brink of bringing redemption to the demons of Yuletide past.

The only thing that may possibly spoil a Christmas miracle would be the mischievous workings of Krampus. Much like his logo/idol, Austin’s fantasy football chaos magic has been known to defy odds and bewilder us all. He has been so close to ultimate glory twice now. And, this matchup with the Commish is a playoff rematch of one of those championship losses. This year’s version hasn’t been as flashy with its dominant wins and miraculous comebacks, but obviously there’s some wintertime wonder still brewing in ol’ Krampus Man. The historical odds seem to be stacked against his quest for redemption, but I never truly count him out. The question is, can he finally fulfill his prophecy?

The Commish’s prediction: I don’t think I’d pick Krampus against many teams here to be honest. Despite an impressive upset win in round one against Kyle. Maybe I’m just saying that to sound less bias when I pick myself… I pick me. Commish continues his own quest for immortality while Krampus Magic hibernates for another year.

A Rumble in the Valley 2.0

#2

Josh (12-4, 1st Pacific)

V

#8

Scott (6-10, 5th Mountain)

This has been the year for playoff rematches from last year. This will be our third. And, this one means even more this time around. Scott is on an unprecedented run of postseason success. He hasn’t lost a playoff game in over three years… We were oh so close to seeing his championship streak snapped by not making the playoffs altogether, but a couple of sneaky wins at the end of the season (and a couple of terrible losses by Laura) proved enough to keep the streak alive. Then the curse of #1 seed reared its head once again to claim Jeremy in round one. Scott’s luck has been tremendous this year, and I don’t like it! I’m tired of having to look at this damn Goose on a green background while typing out his accomplishments. It’s gone on far too long! This is by far his worst team in ‘The Scott Era’, but 300 points the other week and close again last week scares me a bit.

Joshy GM might have the best roster he’s ever assembled.

The Commish’s prediction: Josh gives the Commish the Xmas present he’s been waiting on for years and ends Scott’s dreaded reign. Come on, Josh! Get in the holiday spirit and make your Commish happy, damnit!

Loserville

Sorry guys, you don’t get a graphic this week. “It’s not fair Commish!” I know, I know. That’s the price we pay for not being good enough. And also because Christmas is on a Thursday with multiple games and there’s no way I can pull that off too. But, good effort to us all. At this point you’re all jockeying for position for next week’s final standings games. Here’s a breakdown:

  • By virtue of being lowest seed to lose last week, #7 Jake was relegated to the bottom of the bracket to play #9 Laura, who lost in the first consolation game.

  • #10 Nam moves up after winning consolation game to play highest seeded loser, which is unfortunately for both of them, #1 Jeremy.

  • That leaves our two longtime veterans, #3 Kyle and #5 Chris, to play each other in the other game.

  • Lowest seeded loser will fall down to play the loser of Jake v Laura for a spot in the dreaded last place game! *Cue spooky music… Muahahahahah

May the odds be ever in your favor…
